The painted wolf, also known as wild dog and painted dog, is Africa’s most persecuted predator. It is also its most elusive and enigmatic. Few people know it exists, even fewer care.
Two remarkable people do care and have launched a major campaign to raise global awareness of the species and its plight. For six years, wildlife photographer and author Nicholas Dyer has been tracking and photographing the painted wolves on foot in the Zambezi Valley. For twenty years, conservationist Peter Blinston has been doing all he can to save them from extinction.
Peter and Nick have come together to write a first-of-its-kind book on the painted wolf. Expertly narrated across 300 pages and illustrated with over 220 stunning images, this book will not only let you into the secret world of the painted wolves, but is a powerful work of art, with elegant design, compelling stories, and printed to the highest standard. Mark Carwardine, who has written the foreword, describes it as a “highly informative, inspirational, beautifully illustrated, and critically important book.”
Nicholas Dyer grew up in Kenya and always had a passion for photography. After careers in finance and marketing, stuck behind a desk in London, he took the decision to return to Africa and turn his life around to dedicate it to photography, writing and wildlife conservation. He discovered the wild dogs of Mana Pools National Park, fell in love with them and has spent much of the last five years living in a tent while following and photographing three packs on foot.
Peter Blinston fell in love with African wild dogs while watching documentaries in his native England. He volunteered for Painted Dog Conservation from home in England for two years and then initially moved to Zimbabwe as an unpaid six-month volunteer. He has now been there for 20 years and serves as Managing Director. Peter has helped translate the initial vision for PDC into effective programs that have made a significant difference to the survival of the species.
The Painted Wolf Foundation
The aim of the Painted Wolf Foundation (PWF) is to raise awareness about this much threatened and ignored species and to support organisations that conserve paintedwolves in the field. We do this by combining expert conservation knowledge with skills in communication and social media. PWF is a registered charity with the UK Charity Commission (Registered Charity Number 1176674). The trustees of PWF are Peter Blinston, Nicholas Dyer and Diane Skinner. All profits from the book go into the Painted Wolf Foundation. Funds raised will go directly to the organisations in the field who are doing the critical work to save these neglected creatures.
Thank you for sending me the beautiful Book “Painted Wolves.’’
I consider this book, not only an excellent work of research
and knowledge, but to me, it is an absolutely wonderful Work of Art – I consider it an Art Book. The photos and lighting are out of
this world, and so special, that one can just look at it for hours on end and enjoy and admire each page on its own!
Great photos. A really good read too. This book is excellent value for money. I was amongst those wild dogs at Mana Pools in 2010 so this book also brought back good memories of that time. Well done. Great cause.
I bought this book as a present for my wife and she is loving it. We have not had it very long but she reads part of it everyday and says it will be an excellent Kruger Park companion (in addition to me I hope).
